Executive Nomination Form

Name: Lindsey Gapstur
Major: Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine
Position: President
Classification: Senior (2009-2010)

Why do you think you are a good candidate for this position?

I believe I would be a good candidate for president of Pre-vet club for several reasons. As a senior to be, I have a lot of experience that would help me in my duties as president. Since I was a second-semester freshman, I have been involved at the executive level of Pre-vet club. I have held the SAICU co-chair position and the ZEW interest group position.
I feel as though I am an approachable person and can also handle myself well in formal atmospheres. I feel that these are important characteristics to have as the leader of our club because the position holds such a large amount of responsibility. It is also important to maintain a relaxed atmosphere within the club.
As a senior, I will be carrying a light class load which will allow me more free time to focus on the club. Along with that, I have taken all of the prerequisites for vet school and can offer guidance to underclassmen in those subjects. I have also been through the application process for veterinary school, which has offered a lot of insight into how the system works and what things are helpful to know before you apply. Since vet school is the main goal of the majority of our club, I feel that applying is a vital aspect of that goal.
For these reasons among other, I feel that I am well qualified for the presidential position for Pre-Vet Club. I believe my dedication is evident through my involvement, and I would like the chance to lead our club in serving its members to the best of our abilities to reach the high goals we have all set for ourselves.

What ideas will you bring to the Pre-Vet Club?

I believe that PVC has made huge strides in the past few years, but there is always room for improvement. As our vet school and others make great changes in their programs, I want us to be a part of those. Some examples are the interview process, discounts in the application process, and changing courses in vet school and prerequisites (like biochemistry vs nutrition). I hope to improve the contact between PVC and the Vet school so that we can be as best prepared as possible.
I would also like to expand on the peer-mentor program that was initiated this year. While the idea was great, I feel it didn’t succeed as well as we had hoped. With some changes I feel it could really expand its benefits.
I would also like to get more information on Vet school options and the application processes available to the club. It can be easy to forget about the other vet schools that are available to us other than ISU. With the variety of interests in the club, I would like to see the information about different programs easily accessible. I also feel as there are a lot of suggestions and tips out there for us to utilize, but it is hard to sift through what is legitimate and what is not.

What is the primary goal of this position for the 2008-2009 academic year?

My primary goal as president would be to ensure that the club is offering a wide variety of information to best prepare our members for the futures that they desire.
To me, this means having useful and informative events for interest groups, providing our members with the ability to gain the experience needed, offering information to best equip our members to be successful in class, work, application process, vet school, and life. I also want to create a fun environment within the club to accomplish these goals.

If not elected, how would you contribute to the club?

If not elected president of PVC, I plan to run for another position so that I can best implement these same ideas to our club. While I feel I can best serve the club as president, if not elected to that position, I will hold no grudge against the club. PVC has served me more than I have served it, and I would like to continue to do my part in passing on the knowledge that I have gained to those who succeed me. Ultimately, I plan to offer all the same ideas and take what responsibilities I can offer as if I were elected president.
